Pillar two
Understand
Make sense of the science. What the research shows, what it does not show yet, and how to tell the difference without a degree.
Not believe us. Understand it.
There is a version of health education that works by asking you to trust the person talking. We are not interested in that one. If we cannot explain why something might work in language you can follow, we have not done our job.
Every technology we write about follows the same structure, so you always know where to look and nothing important gets quietly left out.
Every explainer, the same six parts
Same order, every time. Part four is the one most brands leave out.
01
What it is
In one paragraph, without jargon. If a term has to be used, it gets explained the first time it appears.
02
How it works
The proposed mechanism, described honestly. Where the mechanism is theory rather than established fact, we say so.
03
What the research shows
A plain summary of the studies, with citations, and a note on who funded them.
04
What it does not show yet
Small samples, short studies, open questions and claims that have run ahead of the evidence. This section is never skipped.
05
Who should be careful
Contraindications, interactions and anyone who should speak to their doctor before trying it.
06
Where we stand
Whether we have a commercial relationship with anything in the piece. Stated on the page, every time.
Four questions that catch most bad claims
Use these on us as well. That is rather the point.
How many people were in the study, and for how long?
Who paid for it?
Was it done in people, or in a dish?
Is the claim bigger than the finding?
Reading about it only gets you so far
At some point the useful thing is to stand in front of it, ask questions of someone who knows it well, and see how it behaves in a real room.
